A.O.C.

My fave!

I live for the bacon wrapped dates stuffed with parmesan cheese. Great ever changing array of wines by the glass. The small plates change seasonally. The charcuterie and cheese are yummy. Save room for dessert.

Wine Bar and Charcuterie

Review Rating
AOC has a superior wine bar and fresh charcuterie bar surrounding one hell of a restaurant in the middle. The menu changes rapidly but consistently offers a choice of tasty--and heavy--treats. I always get the dates stuffed with cheese wrapped with bacon; the taste is worth the coronary artery disease. You can go to either the wine bar or charcuterie station and eat anything without a reservation, but get a reservation if you want to dine in. AOC is definitely a restaurant for a special occaison or date where you are making an impression. Be careful drinking; the friendly staff is usually willing to give you generous samples of wine to get you to try some more! Prices are moderate to expensive. There is valet parking but precious little street parking because AOC is on 3rd. Street.

a perfect restaurant

It's not that every single dish or wine on A.O.C.'s menu is perfect, it's the combination of food, wine, ambience and service. In short, it's the kind of restaurant I could eat at every day and never get bored.

Although their first restaurant, Lucques, earned partners Caroline Styne and Suzanne Goin a loyal following (and made Goin an F & W Best New Chef in 1999) they decided not to copy the formula with A.O.C. (named after the French wine designation Appellation d'Origine Controlee). " A.O.C. is more urban, architectural and Euro-style than Lucques," explains Styne, the restaurant's wine director. This pan-Mediterranean wine and food bar, which specializes in small plates, is the baby of Lucques chef Suzanne Goin. Taste the rustic pâtés and the lamb skewers with Feta salsa verde, and you'll know that sample sizes suit her just fine. The room is sleek, the long bar welcoming, and the staff knowledgeable and friendly. There are about 50 wines by the glass and many more by the bottle, nearly all ... more

High-end but not stuffy. Loud when it's busy. Hip atmosphere. Thoughtful menu, really tasty. Smaller plates at non-entrée prices, so plan on ordering lots of different stuff. Good wine list and sommelier (who, somewhat ironically, was 7 months pregnant when I was there). Great for an interactive date. A block or two from the Beverly Center.

A prodigious wine list offers some hard-to-find labels from France, Spain, Italy and the New World; one top feature is the off-menu half-glass pour for half the price, which allows for experimentation or a perfect pairing with every dish.

The Scene This chic dining room is all about subdued modern stylings in beige and white--the action peaks at the bustling wine bar, where a handsome Hollywood crowd flirts and buzzes. Those seeking refuge from the scene can seek out the charming starlit patio upstairs. The Food The menu is about great wine--and a landscape of Mediterranean small plates to pair with it. ... more

B-list version of Aaron Spelling teen drama? Hardly. Pithy name amended by ample wine selection. Euro-style wine bar may be Lucques' spicier sister, but she's still well-mannered. Charcuterie is tops: jamon Serrano, speck et al. A four-star loft of white tablecloths, and slightly less white walls, sets the heart on fire. Just try getting reservations for Valentine's Day, or tonight for that matter ... more

Went with a big group (made reservations for the back patio). They seated us within 10-15 minutes. Nice table, great service. The portions are small - but, hey it's tapas style. Every bite was wonderful. I really enjoyed the skirt steak, the chicken and apples, butternut squash, and the chocolate dessert. I will go back for wine and cheese with a smaller party.
